Manipulation of a Bose-Einstein condensate by a time-averaged orbiting potential using phase jumps of the rotating field

We report on the manipulation of the center-of-mass motion (`sloshing') of a Bose Einstein condensate in a time-averaged orbiting potential (TOP) trap. We start with a condensate at rest in the center of a static trapping potential. When suddenly replacing the static trap with a TOP trap centered about the same position, the condensate starts to slosh with an amplitude much larger than the TOP micromotion. We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that the direction of sloshing is related to the initial phase of the rotating magnetic field of the TOP. We show further that the sloshing can be quenched by applying a carefully timed and sized jump in the phase of the rotating field.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

Smiles And Challenges: Multi-Dimensional Perspectives Of Thai Post-Graduate Students In The UK

The stereotypic image of smiling, passive Thai students masks the hidden depths of cultural conflict and academic challenges encountered while studying in the West. Researchers in Australia and North America investigated problems experienced by International students at Western universities but there is a sparsity of research into the experiences of Thai students. Academically gifted Thai students reported various problems while studying in the UK which raised serious concerns and initiated this research project. The research of others, interviews with students and their teachers, questionnaires, classroom observations, reflective journals and group discussions provided a wealth of data which challenged Hofstede’s arguably superficial portrayal of Thai nationals. A picture emerged of complex individuals from a diverse nation never colonised by a Western power. Pedagogical and cultural background influenced the academic and social adaptation of the participants to the challenges and pressures of studying for a one year Masters degree at three UK universities. International students provide a major financial income for UK universities and with this benefit comes responsibility to provide the highest quality education. This study challenges pre-conceptions of stereotypic generalities. It highlights the importance of recognising the individuality of international students and assumptions of national identities. It aims to augment existing research thereby providing a source of valuable pedagogic and cultural information for teachers and their Thai students to their mutual benefit

Engaging Rural Providers About the Potential of Low-Earth Orbit Internet Satellite Supported Rural Telehealth Programs

Abstract This paper describes a DNP project that was designed to address the issue of rural mental telehealth implementation barriers. One of the main barriers to rural telehealth programs has been a technical infrastructure incapable of adequately hosting the telehealth programs. Low-Earth orbit (LEO) internet technology has emerged as a way to solve the rural telehealth conundrum by offering an improved rural technical infrastructure. An integrated review was completed based on the following PICOT question: In rural providers, how does an educational outreach compared to no educational outreach affect provider adoption of new technologies? The evidence showed educational sessions as efficacious in enhancing provider buy-in for new technologies. Lewin’s Change Theory served as the project’s framework. The project planned to offer rural providers education sessions that cover how to implement LEO-supported telehealth programs, the technology’s capabilities, and reimbursement requirements. It measured the providers’ knowledge and interest before and after the educational outreach. It aimed to improve provider knowledge, interest, and overall buy-in. Data analysis for the project utilized the SPSS program to conduct dependent t-tests, Cohen’s d, Cronbach’s alpha, and a post hoc power analysis. Ethical considerations were navigated using the ANA Code of Ethics and Jesuit values. Statistically significant results were found in pre versus post knowledge test and interest survey scores with improvements in both. Limitations were identified around provider attendance concerns and having a sufficient study population. Overall, LEO technology appears to be an ideal option for overcoming short-term and long-term implementation barriers to rural telehealth

Results of investigations on an 0.015-scale 140A/B configuration of the Rockwell International space shuttle orbiter (model 49-O) in the NASA/Ames Research Center 3.5-foot hypersonic wind tunnel (OA36)

The results of wind tunnel tests of the 140A/B configuration components are reported for the fuselage, canopy, elevons, bodyflaps, pods, engine nozzles, rudder, vertical tail, and wing. The test facility, and data reduction procedures are described. Test results for each component are graphed, and tabulated source data are included
